Pantone Converter for HEX, RGB & Closest PMS Match

This Pantone converter translates Pantone Solid Coated codes into approximate HEX and RGB values, and reverses the process by finding the closest Pantone Matching System (PMS) ink for any HEX you paste in. Every reverse lookup is scored with ΔE2000 so you can see at a glance how trustworthy the match is before sending artwork to print.

The Pantone Matching System is a standardized color reproduction system used primarily in printing and manufacturing, where each color carries a unique code such as PANTONE 185 C so designers and printers worldwide produce consistent results. Learn more from the Pantone overview on Wikipedia.

Why conversions are approximate

Screens emit light (additive RGB) while Pantone inks reflect it (subtractive pigment), so the two gamuts only partially overlap. Some vivid screen colors have no physical ink equivalent, and some Pantone spot inks — especially neons, pastels, and metallics — fall outside the sRGB space your monitor can show. The converter handles this by mapping every color into CIE Lab space and minimizing the perceptual distance with the CIEDE2000 formula.

How to read the ΔE2000 score

  • ΔE < 1 — imperceptible difference for most viewers.
  • 1 – 2 — barely noticeable side by side.
  • 2 – 5 — visible but acceptable for non-critical work.
  • > 5 — clearly different; do not rely on the substitution for brand colors.

Typical workflows

  1. Convert a brand's print Pantone into HEX/RGB for a website or design system.
  2. Find the closest PMS ink for a logo that was originally specified only in HEX.
  3. Audit packaging artwork by comparing screen mockups against intended spot colors.

For digital-only refinements after conversion, pair this Pantone converter with the Color Converter to switch between HEX, RGB, HSL, and CMYK, or send a result into the CMYK Color Mixer to prepare a four-color process build. If you only need a quick web value from a hex, the HEX to RGB converter handles that in one click, and the Color Name Finder can attach a friendly label to whichever match you choose.

Print-ready, but always verify

Conversions provided here are mathematical approximations and can vary based on printing conditions, paper stock, and ICC profiles. For commercial production, confirm the chosen Pantone against an official physical swatch book under D50 lighting before approving press runs.
