Pantone vs CMYK — differences, a side-by-side table, and when to use each.
Both live in the print world, but they answer different questions. CMYK builds every color out of four standard inks; Pantone premixes a specific ink so a color comes out identical on every press. Brand consistency versus flexibility and cost — that's the whole trade-off.
Pantone (the Pantone Matching System, PMS) is a library of numbered, premixed spot inks. A printer buys or mixes the exact ink — say PMS 186 C — so the color is reproduced identically across print runs, printers and countries. It includes colors CMYK cannot reach, such as vivid oranges and metallics.
CMYK is process printing: every color is built on-press from percentages of cyan, magenta, yellow and black ink laid down as tiny dots. It is the standard for full-color work — photos, magazines, brochures — because four inks reproduce thousands of colors in one pass, at the cost of small shifts between runs.

Specify Pantone when a color IS the brand: logo marks, packaging, corporate stationery. One or two spot inks guarantee the red on this year's box matches last year's exactly. It's also the only way to print truly fluorescent or metallic colors.
Use CMYK for everything full-color: photography, catalogs, flyers, magazines. It's dramatically cheaper for multi-color work. Convert your RGB design to CMYK before handoff and proof the result, so out-of-gamut colors are adjusted deliberately instead of clamped by the printer.
